If your tooth is knocked out or dislodged, seek treatment immediately. We have the best chance of saving it the sooner we can treat it.

At Island Dental Health Centre, we prioritize emergency patients. Our goal is to help you find relief and, if possible, provide same-day treatment. If your emergency occurs outside our regular business hours, especially if it's a knocked-out tooth, we'll provide guidance over the phone and make arrangements to see you.

What to Do Right After a Tooth Is Knocked Out

The first thing to do when you're dealing with a knocked-out tooth is to remain calm. Next, call your emergency dentist immediately. Time is of the essence when a tooth is dislodged.

While you're in transit to your urgent dental care in Duncan, BC, please be careful when transporting your compromised tooth. Handle it as little as possible and never touch the root. Put the tooth back in its socket, if possible. If you can't do that, use milk or saliva to keep it moist during transport. This helps keep the tooth's cells moist and alive until we can attempt to replant it.

Emergency Dentistry in Duncan, BC: What Happens with My Knocked-Out Tooth?

Once you're at our dental clinic, Dr. Stewart will clean the tooth and do his best to replant it. This typically requires a splint with wire or composite material to neighbouring teeth for support while the compromised tooth heals. Your tooth may also need root canal treatment during the healing process to help prevent an infection.

Dr. Stewart, your Duncan emergency dentist, will keep a close eye on the tooth over the next few weeks to ensure its vitality and stability, and to confirm that the implantation was successful. If it's not, he'll discuss options for tooth replacement with you, such as a dental implant or bridge.
